Pediatric physiotherapy

A physiotherapist expert in pediatric physiotherapy specializes in child’s motor development, from birth to adolescence. She ensures that children acquire motor skills seamlessly (rolling, crawling, moving from one position to another, walking, running, jumping, etc.) without offsets, delays, or asymmetries.

A physical assessment in physiotherapy will verify the integrity of the muscles, nerves, and joints of the young child and will help to identify elements that could compromise the motor development.

She will also be able, if necessary, to determine the Gross Motor Development percentile rank to which your child is located by using standardized and recognized assessments.

She will then deliver therapy sessions in clinic, combining treatment techniques with interesting games for the child. She will also teach you exercises to do at home, between therapies, so that the child can progress more rapidly.

Commonly treated problems:

  • Motor development delay
  • Torticollis (stiff neck) and Plagiocephaly (Flat head syndrome)
  • Poor coordination and balance
  • Atypical walking (toe walking, in-toeing or out-toeing, inability to crawl, etc.)
  • Hypotonia (low muscle tone) or hypertonia (stiffness)
  • Asymmetry (Ex: The child always does movements on the same side or uses one limb less than the other.)
  • Respiratory disorder (Bronchiolitis, Pneumonia, Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis, etc.)
  • Orthopedic disorder (Scoliosis, Foot deformity, Post-fracture, Sprain, Tendinitis, Growing pains, Patello-femoral syndrome, Osgood-Schlatter, Sever’s disease, Legg-Calve-Perthes, etc.)
  • Perineal problems in children (enuresis (bed wetting), encopresis, constipation, urinary or fecal incontinence)
  • After a surgery
  • Prematurity
  • Neurological disorder (Cerebral Palsy, Encephalopathy, Stroke, Tumors, etc.)
  • Concussion/ Traumatic brain injury
